Soul Ties and the Law of Unions
Soul tie is a term that is not found in the Bible, but it is useful for describing the spiritual and soulish realms of interpersonal relationships. It occurs when someone gets tied to another person in an unhealthy way because their identity, their soul, is not properly rooted in Christ. They may struggle with codependency, have trouble moving on when a relationship ends, and/or become fixated on unpleasant or sinful memories. Sexual partnerships are classic examples of soul ties. Lawful marriage between a man and a woman is a godly soul tie, but all other sexual relationships outside of marriage are obviously ungodly.
The world is fixated on sex, yet for all their education and products for protection from its physical consequences, they leave their spiritual lives completely exposed and susceptible to demonic influence. Extramarital sex is shrugged off or even promoted, as in “try before you buy."
There are no contraceptives that can provide protection against the spiritual dangers of sex outside of marriage.
God describes the union between a man and a woman in Genesis:
"This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." Gen. 2-23-24
The Hebrew word for cleave or join is dabaq, which means to stick or adhere to, glue or fasten together. We refer to this binding as a "soul tie." There is a spiritual law of union that operates through sexual intimacy. Paul quotes the verse from Gen. 2:23-24 to teach us this law.
… do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, "THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH." 1Co 6:16(NASB)
But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 1 Co 6: 17 (NASB)
When we intimately join ourselves with the Lord, He imparts Himself to us, His joy, peace, righteousness, and more. We, in turn, give to Him who we are—our hearts, our bodies, our minds, and our devotion. This is a Godly soul tie. He fills us with His Holy Spirit and we relinquish ours back to Him. Angels begin to ascend and descend upon us.
The converse is true as well! We can receive demonic spirits from a sexual partner to whom we are not married. Unholy behaviors, attributes, and character traits begin to “cling” to us. Our personality may even begin to change. We wonder why we are having similar issues as our partner. We have encountered a union of the flesh that enables demonic impartation, and it’s dangerous. It will open doors we don’t want to be opened!
Steps to Breaking an Ungodly Soul Tie
1. Confess and repent from all sexual sin. Speak the following proclamation aloud: Thank you, Jesus, for your mercy and forgiveness. I confess all sexual sin and invite You to be Lord of my life, especially my sexuality. I ask you to break every bond of sexual relationships outside of marriage. I recognize that this is sin and I repent of all sexual sin.
2. Sever the Soul tie. Pray out loud: Thank you, Jesus, for dying that I might be set free. I break and sever every ungodly soul tie with (speak out the name(s) of your sexual partners). I now use the authority I have in Jesus Christ to command all demon spirits to loose me now and have no further right in me through these relationships.
I decree, in the Name of Jesus Christ, that my spirit is now loosed from (name(s) of your sexual partners) and free from ungodly impartation.
I call back that part of my soul that was imparted to (name(s) of your sexual partners), and I send back any part of their soul(s).
3. Release them. Pray: I release any responsibility for (name(s) of your sexual partners.)
Free Your Emotions. Declare: I will no longer meditate on past sexual partners and encounters, thus letting go of all control, manipulation, and dominance of my emotions. All fear of (name(s) of your sexual partners) is now removed from me in the Name of Jesus Christ and by the power of His blood.
4. Resist the Enemy. Do not allow yourself to get re-entangled in the past. Immediately rid yourself of all physical reminders, such as photographs of former lovers or love notes, that might tempt you to dwell on previous sin. Resist the Devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7).
You have now re-established your authority over your own body and over any demonic activity associated with the ungodly soul tie(s).
Such were some of you, but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. 1 Co 6:11 (NASB)
